As in SDL/X11/'framebuffer output with libmpeg2 (or similar) rather than 
relying on a hardware MPEG2 decoder?

This is something that's been badly requested for a long time. I think you 
could make a lot of friends if you choose to write this as a primary device 
plugin :)
