I patched the latest CVS (right, pretty old).

For me it seems that your mplayer-plugin doesn't work properly. 
I'm using version 0.7.9 and I'm at least able to watch a VCD with mplayer
(so from a dxr3 plugin perspective I can't do any more).

Well, this is not initiated by the dxr3-plugin. The dxr3 will be released 
after calling  SetPlayMode with PlayMode equal 
pmExtern_THIS_SHOULD_BE_AVOIDED.

I assume that you're using an old mplayer plugin with the old dxr3 plugin.
