I also had the problem of what the autoPID patch is good for. After some
own experience, I would say, it mainly makes a kind of "fine-tuning"
meaning that if you switch to a specific channel, it automagically scans
for all audio- and video-streams (sorry Florian, using channel here will
confuse the common user) provided by this "Channel".

For your example: If ZDF starts broadcasting "Wetten, dass ...?" in
Dolby Digital and you switch to ZDF, it will discover the new
audio-stream broadcasting automatically. If you want to store this
discovery or only observe it, you can go to the channel setting for ZDF
afterwards and will see the digital PID set. To save this, simply "save"
the current settings shown via the corresponding vdr-button.

The manual "saving" has to be done as the autoPID patch does/can not
store the channel changes automatically. The normaly only affect the
current running vdr.

Another thing, the autoPID patch does is adding a "scanner" plugin,
which you can invoke via vdr's main menu. This plugin scans for all (or
also only the current transponder, I'm not sure) for channels and append
newly found channels to the vdr channel list. The results of such a scan
are automatically saved to your channels.conf.

Also worth of mention is the last column of the channels.conf in
conjuntion with autoPID. In this column, you can set that autoPID should
not change the values for this channel any more by setting it to the
"magic RID". More about that and autoPID can be found in the file
README.autopid contained in the autopid-patch (you find it in your vdr
source directory after applying the patch).

Hope this helps, if I told something wrong, I would be thankful if
someone corrects me!
