A good way could be use TT subtitles plugin made by Ragnar with A xml ouput with the timings and then convert output to something like the files produced by mencoder (like vob) when on encodes a DVD.
The one can read the encoded file like :

mplayer film.avi -vobsub TTsubtitles

What dou think about that ?
