I have tried you scripts but I am having some problems. The main one is
with viewing the schedule. I always get a timeout message when this
happens. Worse: vdr no longer responds to any svdrp after that.

My (quick) guess is that this is due to the amount of epg data on my
system (epg.data is 270Kb - which I would not have thought was that
much, but it may take a while to lste over my isdn).

That may be a problem of the LSTE under svdrp, since it returns the _complete_ EPG database without prefiltering and can take a long time depending on its size. You could try to change timeouts on your local HTTP server, but I don't think it would help much.

I have now moved the wap gateway onto my vdr box, this has fixed this
problem but I still get other errors.

Whenever I use my phone and select schedule, I get "No Reply, try again
later". This message comes up almost straight away, which would seem to
be a little strange for a timeout.

Normally there's also a gateway between your mobile phone provider and the internet, which could cause problems.
Have you tired to connect locally from your PC workstation? WML is supported by Opera and there's also a wml browser plugin for Mozilla. Or you could examine the response when you invoke the cgi scripts from the command line.

One possibility I can imagine to improve response time is to cache the epg in a (small) database running on the WAP gateway... I'll also try some code changes in the scripts to achieve faster response.

This is the approach that vdradmin uses.

Another alternative (more on topic for the list) is that LSTE could be
modified to accept a timerange, channel etc to limit its output.

That would certainly help most. I thought of that too and will have a look into VDR's source. A svdrp command which (quickly) returns the schedule as displayed on the OSD could be very helpful. I'll provide a patch if I have success.
