I had about the same problem here on my old DVD drive.
To make it work however, I had to turn on SCSI-emu for the drive and I had to install an RPC1 firmware. After doing this it run smoothly.
Turning on SCSI-emu is easy I think. http://toganm.tripod.com/ide-cdrw.html

The RPC1 FW can be found at http://forum.rpc1.*rg/dl_all.php (substitute the "*" for what you think makes most sense)
