I just soldered two LED:s to a parallel port and created a small simple
plugin that lights one LED when VDR is running and another when a
recording is being made. Instructions for the wiring can be found here:

You can hack one up yourself in a few minutes, just copy the
cStatus example from the PLUGINS.html file.
