* softmpeg doesn't use the hardware MPEG2 decoder of the board (cle266). The author says "it works good enough" for him.
* Colin Patton wrote a patch to softmpeg a while ago (around april/may 2004) that make use of the hardware MPEG2 decoder, but I didn't manage to compile it cleanly (check the softmpeg ML for info)
* softmpeg has stability problems (read : bad crashes), depending on the channels you try to watch.
* I switched to softdevice because Stefan Lucke seems to be more invested in his project than Michael Hunold is, and I have absolutely no skill to debug the code (I tried, though).
* I still have problems with softdevice (jerky sound and video), and very little time to check that : I still need to optimize some things (recompile ffmpeg 0.4.9pre1 with Nehemiah optimizations)
* I use softdevice with the DirectFB output method, and really don't want to go the Xv route (thus no softdevice/Xv output or xine plugin)
* I didn't see any problems in your description : you basically reached the same point that I reached (jerky sound and video, crashes, etc.)
* I noticed fewer crashes with softdevice after I compiled ffmpeg 0.4.9 (latest, maybe latest CVS) : you should probably try that (Stefan did fix more crashes due to the softdevice code, after that)
* I still have another problem with softdevice : the OSD is fully transparent, and I can't make it alpha-blended, in spite of what Stefan anounced (I'll retry with kernel 2.6.8.1-epia1)
