want to go the Xv route (thus no softdevice/Xv output or xine plugin)
* I didn't see any problems in your description : you basically reached 
the same point that I reached (jerky sound and video, crashes, etc.)
* I noticed fewer crashes with softdevice after I compiled ffmpeg 0.4.9 
(latest, maybe latest CVS) : you should probably try that (Stefan did 
fix more crashes due to the softdevice code, after that)
* I still have another problem with softdevice : the OSD is fully 
transparent, and I can't make it alpha-blended, in spite of what Stefan 
anounced (I'll retry with kernel 2.6.8.1-epia1)
