Once upon a time Michael Moster shaped the electrons to say...

Maybe have a look at sandisk or PQI or any other of
CF-cards and there data sheets?

A 128MB-CF-Card costs not more than 80EUR at the moment.
With enough bugs in the poket up to 512MB (open end) can be bought
and are not limited to just one vendor.

It seems not to be very much known that:

ALL CF-Cards (used in digi-cameras etc.) (can be) run in "IDE-Mode".
All you need is a -simple- passive(!) adapther
between the 50pin-microCF-Plug and the 40pin.2,54mm-IDE plug.

A home brew can be seen at
http://www.4data.de.vu/ etc..
The wiring at:
http://www.jgerhard.de/4data/Cf_ide-bauplan.pdf
http://www.wau.nl/hemeltje/temporary/personal/miscelaneous/cfadapter.html

For those who has not the knowlegde wher the solder iron becomes hot
may buy one (It's of cause larger):
Reichelt has an MPEG player which contains such an adapter too.
For the same price (without an MPEG-player) one is available
her by
http://www.delta-components.de/suchbaum/ecomp/switches/Switches_18.html

For the above you require an other CF-to-PCMCIA adatpter too, but there are
CF-to-IDE too:
http://www.flashmemory.com.au/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=3&cat=FlashMemory+Disk+Drives

(Maybe add some black color/plastic and sell it for 200EUR? ;-) )

The limit is currently at 512MB (with "microdrive" 1..2GB, but
that's makes here not much sense).

The card behaves really as a simple IDE harddisk!
No spezial software or driver is required.

But attention:
The "check disk" is required with such silicon disks too:
because the band width is very limited (approx 4MB/s)
the CPU holds tables in it's faster RAM which originates from
disk.
On shutdown/sync those tabels are flushed back to disk.

The only/best way to avoid this problem is not allow writes to the disk.
A way to minimize the problem/time is a jorunaling file system like reiser-FS.
