Surely this other hardware couldn't use the published API, as it makes no 
provision for these other devices? So wouldn't you need a different API for 
this other hardware anyway, even if someone wrote some drivers for it? Or 
am I being stupid and missing something (as usual)?

I'm sure devfs is the way to go in the future, but until it becomes the 
default on most Linux installations, getting it to work will remain a pain.
