OK, thanks to Jon's helpful pointers I can now run tzap! Can someone please
confirm that these ber numbers are way too high for decent reception.
However, there is one slight gremlin here, BBC ONE which has the lower error
rate won't play at all nicely through mplayer, however, ITV 1 which has
substantially higher error rates plays "OK". (OK means that the picture and
sound both look fine, but to my ear there are slight hiccups in the sound
which might be because of unfixed errors in the audio stream?)

So this one plays really poorly

mm dvbstream # tzap -r "BBC ONE"
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
tuning to 505833330 Hz
status 01 | signal c5c5 | snr a1a1 | ber 0001fffe | unc 00000000 |

From my experience in the UK block error rates below 1000 are sufficient to get a completely stable stream. Data might get lost somewhere else on the board under linux? IRQ? VIA chipset? Something along those lines maybe?

Although it works in Windows, I'd try this on another machine just determine whether or not it's the driver / signal or something else on the system.
