Sometimes the data isn't in the memory, sometimes it is. I always
noticed that when the recording menu was slow on the first time, if I
immediately did an exit and selected the recording menu again it was
fine. Alos remember that the popen() call also starts the shell which
probably does some extra processing and causes a delay.

As Klaus mentionend, you may find out more if you put some extra debug
printf's in.
