aybe have a look at my kathreinlcd PlugIn 
(www.magoa.net/linux/index.php?view=kathreinlcd), it polls the _parallel_ 
port for buttons, it only delays each loop with usleep(1), and I don't 
notice that thread needing much CPU at all.
