First there is 5400 and 7200 versions of the samsungs out there. I guess
5400 rpm drives qill be cooler and quiter - but what about performance.

Samsung is highy recommended. The 5400 is a little cooler and quieter, but
the audible difference is so small, just 0,01dB. Since the 7200 is often
cheaper than the 5400 due to it being more common, I decided for a 7200 and have
not regretted it. It is also totally silent at 50cm distance even when mounted
in an external case and sitting on top of my PC.

A little more critical is indeed the heat, as you can see from below
comparison:

SV1604N, 5400 RPM, 2.6bel Idle, 2.7bel Read/Write. Uses 5.5W idle, 7.0W
seek.
SP1604N, 7200 RMP, 2.7bel Idel, 2.8bel Read/Write. Uses 7.0W idle, 8.6W
seek.

Are these values valid if you set the acoustic level with IBM's feature tool to low noise ? I don't think so.
