Sorry the README is complete outdated and must be rewritten.

That is in live mode (something is playing) or when a recording is paused ?
Which graphic card do you use?
Does moving the window around, restores part of the video ?

Complete black background ? It should be semi transparent now.
Screenshots are a few months old. Formerly  the OSD background was full
transparent.

Black background, video disappears when upon OSD close, that looks
like your card has some problems with color keying.
Whats your exact X11 version and card type ?
