the 80 pin cable that came with the drive.
my mobo supposively supports UDMA66 and I have an
older drive as a master on the primary IDE and this
drive as a master on the secondary IDE.

UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 *udma4 udma5
And indeed the asterisked entry shows the drive is using UDMA66.

I would try installing the drive as hdb - slave on the primary bus, and run hdparm -tT /dev/hdb, as something does not seem right, broken secondary channel or drive.

My humble Pentium 1 233 using a 60GB version of your drive achieves this on a UDMA33 channel:

[root@tx rs]$ /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 2.64 seconds = 48.48 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.90 seconds = 22.07 MB/sec

Richard
