Looks like the tuner does not get a lock or loses sync and then starts zig-zag scanning for the frequency, but somehow this confuses the frontend and it dies...

Maybe. The signal seems to be not very well here. I often get "tuning
failed" messages. I've picked the cheapest antenna I could find,
assuming that would be good enougth because I'm living in the city, not
far away from the berlin television tower. Probably that wasn't a great
idea :-/ Or there are any tricks I can try?
Inside the city, especially here near the transmission tower we often have troubles with reflections and interferences. Well, OFDM (the DVB-T multiplex and modulation scheme) handles this much better than analog TV transmissions but still not perfect. Usually you need to try to move your antenna a few meters or try another one.

The 2.4 kernel seems to have issues too btw, it crashed several times
today while testing mpeg2 playback (i.e. read mpeg ts stream drom dvr0
and play that).
Can you please report a little more in detail where it crashes, did you ran ksymoops over the oops logs?
