I would do it not to far away from J2. One of my VDR devices is the
Fujitsu-Siemens Multitainer
http://www.ciao.com/Fujitsu_Siemens_Computers_Fujitsu_Siemens_MULTITAINER_DTS_1_x_C_RAM_64_MB_HD_1_x_13_1_GB_DVD_Mdm_LAN_EN_Fast_EN_Win98_SE_Monitor_keine_r__1217355

In contrast to you I didn't connect a long SCART cable directly to J2. I
put a female SCART connector, S/PDIF (optical/electrical), audio out
into the back of the Multitainer. All the circuits necessary I put onto
this connector. The connection between backplane connectors and J2 is 20
cm long standard ribbon cable. There is absolutely no problem to solder
a few components to this connector. The connection to TV is then either
a standard SCART cable or standard AV cable together with a adapter.

As I mentioned to you I have only limited experience with the RGB
signals together with a RGB to S-video converter.
