[vdr] Re: How to get the VDR box silent

Hello everyone,

I will be starting to assemble a VDR box soon, but in order to install it in the living room it should be quite silent (this would also help a lot to convince my wife of this project (-; ).

I think that the only really noisy parts of the box will be the cooling fans of the power supply unit and the main processor. Now I read in a recent issue of the CHIP magazin that you could use a PIII 1.2GHz without fan if underclocked to 600MHz. Unfortunatly this seems quite a waste of processor power (which you pay for of course).

Does anyone know of a less expensive CPU that will run without active cooling ? How did you deal with the noise problem ?

I did it in a maybe expensive way: I bought a VIA EPIA ME6000 board (189 Euro). This is a complete motherboard in 17cm x 17cm with Network, Firewire, USB2.0 etc. with a fanless 600 MHz VIA Eden processor. I intend to use this box not only as a VDR but as a 7day/24h running "multi purpose server" with voicemail, FAX receiver etc.

The power supply fan is nearly silent, the main noise source is the hard disk which is presently mounted the usual way directly to the chassis. You hear the low frequency noise of the disk (120Hz) which is radiated by the chassis (not very load). The disk is nearly silent when running unmounted, so a better mounting with "noise decoupling" should bring this noise down too.

I wonder why commercial sat receivers (like the DreamBox running on Linux http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/cat_eng/produkte/dreambox.php4) don't have the cooling problem ? They have a Main processor and power supply as well.

Dnn't know the Dreambox, but as far as I know, the DBOX 2 uses a PowerPC embedded processor. It runs with passive cooling.

Thank you for anyone who can give me some information on this subject.
