I know, but if I go through all this trouble, I guess it's better
to go for the 2.6 branch, because that's apparently the only one
that is actively supported.

I believe I've solved it in the meantime. The problem was with
the VES1893 chip, which apparently delivers faulty 'sync' values.
I've posted a patch on the linux-dvb ML.
