Sorry, but I really can't imagine these except some experimental devices 
for
the time where not enough integrated chips are available.

Do I miss something?

In the last years the frontend chips became more and more sophisticated,
all new tuners can generate DiSEqC commands. I see no reason why this 
development should not continue -- which STB manufacturer should use 
expensive seperate components when he can get a cheap and simple 
integrated solution?
