First of all, I like the current functionality. It is very simple to use
(you don't have to specifically edit the old files) and it's safe, i.e.
you cannot fill up your disk by accident. On the other hand I'm not
writing my recordings to CD-Rs so my cutting needs are limited to
cutting out adds.

A thought just occurred to me, that one could of course add another type
of cutting mark to the system. With cutting mark A the cut out portion
would just be removed from the file, but the actual file would stay in
one piece. One would use this function to cut out adds. With cutting
mark B the file would be split, nothing would be removed. I did not look
at the source how simple this would be to implement. Might be that it's
not trivial and it would mess up the current user interface, i.e. old
users might have problems with cutting if the change was not obvious. In
practise one could press the 0 buttononce to get a mark-A, twice to get
a mark-B and three times to get rid of the mark (that is, it's a three
way toggle).

On the other hand people have been burning VDR recordings to cds for
ages without a cutting feature like this with tosvcd for example. The
only benefit would be that you could targetthe disk change at a scene
change on the movie.
