[vdr] Re: Feature request - time shift

Andreas,
VDR is my first sat receiver, seems like I may have missed
out on knowing some of the features of other STBs.

Cheers Brian

Well,
maybe I dont correctly understand what you want, but I think
just pressing the PAUSE key (starts to record) and then play key
(starts to play back the recording) will give you that.

If you want a buffer of a certain time that VDR has automagically
recorded without being asked to, that was discussed a few times here
and I dont think is planned at this time.

I think, what he is asking for and what I've seen in many comercial
digital records it like this. They simply record everything you are
watching, maybe setting some kind of cut mark when switching the channel
and keep this recording for a configurable time, mostly up to 3 hours.
So this offers not only freeze and continue watching but also looking
back a scene - and this without having to program a timer - and you can
record something even when it has been started and you see that this
movie maybe interesting to record.

I know VDR instant time shift, but that is nothing else than
instant recording / playback like pressing
RECORD RED OK PAUSE as in a makro.
If i zap the channels, pressing PAUSE and PLAY,
zapping and PAUSE / PLAY again and so on,
than this results in starting many recordings, in the worst case
more than one on every channels until the load blocked the VDR.

Also if i watch longer than the preset time in VDR time shift mode,
the timer stops noteless and i'm angry about the missing end of the
programme.
It is hard to explain a normal user (i.e. my wife), what is wrong now :-)

Time shift in a comercial receiver is like a buffer,
the data will be destroid, when you switch the channel.
You don't have to pay attention about unnecessary recordings.
You can watch many hours in time shift mode unless to notice about it at
all.
Sometimes there is a scene you want to see again,
but you don't recorded it? No problem for the permanent time shift mode.
And IF you want to record, you can go back and start the
recording at the beginning, may be under attention of the EPG data.

It would be nice, if anybody could explain,
where is the best place to implement
such a functionality.
I think it is different from recording and would be a great feature.

Thanks
Andreas
