[linux-dvb] Re: popen for ac3 and thread (ringbuffer)problem

Good evening everybody and please excuse the quantity of postings I produce
recently ;)

I did some more testing today, as I finally had some spare time.
Excuse me if I repeat some stuff from my earlier postings regarding this
topic, as I want to do a resumee as exact as possible.
I think we'll have to collect some more info to be able to find where this
problem lies.

Okay, if I use vdr without the -a option, everything works fine.

When using the -a option and while replaying vdr crashes, related to the OSD.
It happens REGARDLESS whether:

- replaying DVD or a recorded file
- using ac3dec or piping directly into a file (on a separate hd)
- sound stream is ac3 or pcm

With DVD's, it seems to happen a little bit more likely.
Sometimes it crashes before bringing up the menu, or sometimes even if I
only move inside the menu.

However, vdr ALWAYS crashes instantly when I do a fast forward while the
progress bar is displayed.

Otherwise, with recordings, I can bring up the OSD quite a few times.
With DVD's, the crash comes after bringing up the menu 2-4 times.
If the driver is not freshly loaded, the OSD menu mostly crashes vdr
already the first time I try to bring it up (also only with DVDs).

Once I kill vdr (need to kill -9 it), the driver restarts with OUTCOMMAND
ERROR 1 and ARM RESET.
With the new driver (2001-08-17) the make rmmod problem seems to be gone, BTW.
The messages are now:
Aborted...
commandrequest error
OOPS: no current->files
dvb: ARM RESET

This time I'll add more complete details about my system, as perhaps my
companions on this issue find something we have in common....
As I mentioned before, my box is otherwise very stable and almost never
crashes during normal use of vdr or without the -a switch.

Hardware:
AMD K6 500 Processor (latest stepping), 128 MB
Asus P5A Board with ALi Chipset and latest, final, beta BIOS ;-) (Yes, USB
is disabled ;-)
SiS6326 AGP VGA, RTL8139 NIC, Winfast 4x Soundcard, external AC3 Amplifier
Fujitsu Siemens DVB-C with CA module and IRDETO ALLCAM installed
3 x 40 GB EIDE HD for /videoX, DVD is slave of second IDE
Adaptec 2940 (non-U, non-W ;-) with 3 GB Quantum SCSI disk mounted as root
and CD Writer
Crystalfontz 4x20 serial LCD Display on COM1, IRMan on COM2
Everything resides in a big tower with chassis fan (the IRDETO stays
cooooool....)

Software:
Linux 2.4.7 (originally Debian Potato)
Siemens Driver 2001-08-17 patched by Klaus
vdr 0.92, run from runvdr script (usually with -a 'ac3dec -C')
ALSA driver CVS 2001-08-05 with ac3dec
latest LIRC, latest libirman
BTW: I tested without the lcdproc patch of course.

This all seems a bit odd, but maybe (hopefully) it makes sense to someone.

Greetings
Stephan
